DNR Stepping Stones | Outdoor Education Programs in Michigan

Why We Support Outdoor Education in Michigan

At Weekend Wild, we believe time outside changes people — especially kids.

That belief is why we’re proud to support DNR Stepping Stones, a Michigan-based outdoor education program helping people build confidence, skills, and connection in nature.

Stepping Stones opens the door to the outdoors for individuals and families who may not otherwise have access — creating experiences that leave a lasting impact beyond the trail.

What Is DNR Stepping Stones?

DNR Stepping Stones is an outdoor education initiative led by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The program provides free, hands-on outdoor experiences designed to introduce participants to Michigan’s public lands in a welcoming, supportive environment.

The focus isn’t just on outdoor activities — it’s about confidence, curiosity, and building a lifelong connection to nature.

No experience required. Just a willingness to show up.

Outdoor Activities Offered Through Stepping Stones

Stepping Stones programs take place throughout Michigan and offer guided outdoor experiences such as:

  • Fishing basics and aquatic education
  • Camping fundamentals
  • Archery instruction
  • Paddling and water exploration
  •  Nature discovery and outdoor skills

Programs typically run over multiple sessions, allowing participants to grow skills, comfort, and confidence over time.

Who Stepping Stones Programs Are For

Stepping Stones serves individuals and families from all backgrounds, with a strong focus on:

  • Youth ages 9 and older
  • Urban and underserved communities in Michigan
  • Individuals with limited access to outdoor recreation
  • Families looking to explore Michigan’s natural resources together

The mission is simple: make the outdoors feel accessible, safe, and welcoming for everyone.

The Impact of Outdoor Education

Time spent outdoors has proven benefits for mental health, physical wellness, and emotional development. Through Stepping Stones, participants:

  • Build confidence and independence
  • Develop environmental awareness
  • Strengthen social connections
  • Discover new outdoor interests
  • Create lasting memories tied to nature

Many participants return year after year, carrying these experiences into everyday life.

Where Stepping Stones Programs Take Place

Stepping Stones programs are hosted at Michigan State Parks and DNR-managed recreation areas across the state, giving participants hands-on access to forests, lakes, trails, and campgrounds close to home.

Why Weekend Wild Partners With DNR Stepping Stones

Weekend Wild exists to encourage people to slow down, unplug, and reconnect — with nature and with each other.

Stepping Stones is doing that work every day by:

  • Introducing kids to the outdoors
  • Removing barriers to access
  • Creating meaningful experiences that shape lifelong habits

Supporting Stepping Stones aligns perfectly with our mission and values.

Our Commitment to Giving Back

Beginning in 2026, a portion of Weekend Wild proceeds will directly support DNR Stepping Stones, helping fund outdoor education programs and access for Michigan families.

When you support Weekend Wild, you’re helping create more moments outside — for the next generation.
